Shock as Bowhill club closes over unpaid utility bill

  • Bowhill War Memorial Club was forced to close over an unpaid bill

After worries of the Dundonald Institute's demise - there has been another shock in Cardenden this week, with the Bowhill War Memorial Club being forced to close its doors over an unpaid utility bill.

Last Friday the club had to close after its electricity was cut off by provider npower - a move which has been described as 'disastrous', 'shocking' and a 'tragedy' for the town.

The company refused the club any more time to pay an outstanding bill of £10,000, and the committee members were forced to close the Station Road premises, putting the future of around 14 staff into doubt.

The club is hoping to re-open for the weekend, with an event planned for Saturday evening, and a gig on Sunday. Plans are being made to get a generator if the problem with the power company can't be resolved in time.

William Miller says

As the chairman says, Bowhill War Memorial Club is only one of many faciing a hard time due to increased running costs plus the fall in takings caused by folk buying cheap drink and haviing friends round at home rather than going out and having to stand outside if they are smokers.  All social clubs, even those with charitable status are facing these problems and are being kept alive only due to the patronage and efforts of the various management committees who must all be applauded for trying to keep the social life of the villages going.

I fear that unless they have another interest to offer such as the Bowling Club, Golf club, etc, they are going to fall away as none of the local venues fighting for the same limited clientele can nowadays compete with the bigger, flashier multi-outlet venues which attract the younger folks who are prepared to put their cash over the bar.

It would indeed be a pity if local clubs like the Shelter and the War Memorial Club died off and the Council continued to close halls,  but Margo is off the mark when she says there would be no other place in the village to host charitable events, etc. What about the hall at the Bowhill Centre? The Central Bar has an upstairs function Room, The Railway Tavern and  Pyotts also have under-used function rooms, the Village Inn in Dundonald can be made available, not to mention the Bowling Club, the Masonic Hall and Auchterderran St Fothad's Church Hall, all of which, though smaller than the others, would also no doubt be willing to host such events. You can also have a drink in The Auld Hoose if it's a quiet night you're after.

Perhaps the existence of so many places in the village is even part of the problem. With all these venues trying to attract the same customers who can be surprised that it is a struggle to keep them alive.
