It's always good to take a trip down memory lane, and Elaine Millar has been looking through her archives and come up with some wonderful old photos of Cardenden in days gone by.

Elaine has posted some nostalgic old photographs of school groups, football teams and people young and old around Cardenden in the 1950s. You can find the photos in the s1cardenden photo albums, both here in the 'Sports' section, and here in the 'People' folder in the photo section of s1cardenden.

Does anyone have pics of the old band hut to the rear of Dundonald Crescent, backing onto the Den, from many years ago?

I believe there was once a band hut then possible allotments or someone who kept hens? Up until a few years ago it was a derelict garage site of which is what i can remember it when i was a child.

I now own this land and am curious to how it once looked, there seems to be some sort of cobbled street buried under the top soil.

Please contact me on 07725902123,

many thanks Lee

There used to be a Pipe Band hut at the top of the den as you say. My late Grandfather used to have a 'Doo Hut' close by as well but, that dissapeared when the 'Raws' were demolished around about 1965 ish. The cobbled stones you mention were laid down to enable access to a garage which belonged to the Chalmers family who resided on the bottom left hand side flat nearest to the new houses built at Dundonald Crescent.

Dysart and Dundonald Pipe Band used the hut you are writing about. My late Grandfather had a pigeon loft or a 'doo hut' close by to the hut. The cobbled stones were laid to gain access to a garage that belonged to the Chalmers family who resided on the blottom left hand side of the four in a block house. Be very carefull about the land you have bought as during the 1926 general strike, a coal mine was opened to gain access to outcrops of coal. Neil Chalmers and myself re-opened it up again during the 1984-85 strike but found it to be all closed in underground.

there was a " HUT " as you call it.

it used to be a bakers place and the hen coup at the back belonged to auld Mc Antyre who used to chase us all over the village and he lived along by the concil yard

we used to practice there for a lot of years with the pipe band even after they knocked the auld raws down.

if you need phoos check with bob shepard, jock bradford or diamonds wife.
