Bowhill Woodland
Under a "Woodland In and Around Town" Forestry Commission funded project the first phase of a programme of woodland management is currently under way in Bowhill. This area is bounded on four sides by Jamphars, Wallsgreen, the River Ore and the Purves Recycling Plant. Two main areas are included in the first part of this project. The first consists of 3 compartments to the rear of Jamphlars Place and Wallsgreen where "coppicing with standards" has taken place. This method of thinning retains some semi mature trees whilst at the same time cuts the remainder down to the base. The remainder forms a plantation for future coppicing resulting in a harvesting and extraction of wood fuel if there is an available market. At the same time biodiversity and recreation have been considered within the management plan. Regeneration (regrowth of woodland trees and shrubs) is already taking place in two of these compartments and within the next few years the areas will be supporting a vigorous mix of vegetation. The second compartment to be thinned is an area along the River Ore which will focus on a 10 metre strip adjacent to a footpath concentrating on the felling of grey alder. Smaller sections of felled trees have been chipped back in to the woodland and larger sections of timbers with a market value have been taken off site. The area will be made user friendly for walkers by the addition of 2 interpretation boards, waymarkers and signposts and the opening up of well-used paths.
