Bowhill Burns Club celebrates annual supper in Cardenden

The Bowhill People's Burns Club held its 72nd annual Burns Supper in Cardenden on Saturday 28th January in the Dundonald Institute.

125 members and guests took their seats and enjoyed a hearty traditional supper of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties served by staff from the Tipsy Nipper.

Club President Kevin Thompson welcomed the company including Honorary President the Right Honourable Henry McLeish who delivered the toast 'Peace and the People' which is unique to BPBC. Also present were guest speaker David Baird, Immediate Past President of the Robert Burns World Federation who gave us the toast 'The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns'. David Lamond and Ron Fleming represented The Auchterderran Jolly Beggars Burns Club and Ron graciously accepted Honorary membership of BPBC at the supper.

The club's newest recruit, Douglas Mooney gave 'The Selkirk Grace', Past Club President Bob Garmory enthusiastically addressed the Haggis piped in by Jock Ritchie and Douglas Abercrombie got the evening's entertainment started in grand style with his rendition of 'There was a lad'.

Over 30 items were presented by the club members with favourites 'Tam o' Shanter' by Bill Adie, 'the Twa Dogs' introduced by Iain Harkins with Bob Garmory as Caesar and Archie Abercrombie as Luath, Alstair Deas, Bill Dawson and Kevin Thompson gave us 'Willie Brewed a Peck o' Maut' and Ron Fleming regaled us with the tale of 'Death and Doctor Hornbook'.

Cameron Goodall recited 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' illustrated by a slide-show of images from past times and the final toast, 'to The Lasses' was given by club member Iain Harkins.

The musical accompaniment was provided by Paul Glancy and Honorary Member Michael Philip and Club President Kevin Thompson presided over the evening bringing it to a close with the traditional 'Auld Lang Syne' at midnight.

The club meets every 2nd Saturday at 7pm in the Bowhill Hotel and the next meeting will be on Saturday 11th February. New members will be made very welcome.
