Bairnsbridge Cottage memories?

  • Downie family at Bairnsbridge Cottage, Cardenbarns.

Does anyone remember the little wooden cottage that used to be in the Cardenden/Bowhill woodland? (or, 'round the Den as it was more commonly known) The 100 year old cottage was called Bairnsbridge Cottage. My family lived there with our dogs, goats, chickens and a horse until we moved out for some renovation works in 1980. Unfortunately, we never got to move back in as the garage, shed, internal oak doors and oak wall panelling were all stolen from the property. What was left was then vandalised and burned to the ground.

It still makes me sad to think what might have been. My family still own this land and we'd love to use it again in the future as we spent the happiest years of our life growing up there. Do you have any stories or memories of this cottage? We'd love to hear them Also, any ideas of how to bring the land to life again would be appreciated.

Ann that's lovely to hear. It was probably a lady called MrsRennie that owned Bairnsbridge cottage in those days. That's who my family bought it from. Really miss living there.

I remember the cottage very well. We used to play down the Den often and walk passed the cottage on our way to the 'circle'. After you had left the cottage it went into disrepair. My pals and I used to ride our trialbikes round that way. We made our own scrambling and trial circuits in and around that area. Finishing off at the 'Fishermans Bridge' to was down our bikes before heading home to Dundonald.

I also remember this cottage. It was near the junction which led to Shaws Mill. I used to ride my horse here and gallop round the corner and up the hill past the cottage. A danger to everyone, I'm sure. I always wanted to live there.

Was there not  a family called Fraser lived there I recall a girl in my class called May Fraser could that be them ??

I remember a family called Rennie lived there around 1975/6. The son was called Colin Rennie who will be about 54 years old now. He was a security person in Dunnes Glenrothes a few years ago.

I always thought the cottage was in a superb location....it's a pity it was destroyed.

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
