LODGE ST FOTHAD'S AUCHTERDERRAN No1059

On 10th April 1909, A petition to grant a Charter for a Masonic Lodge, to be known as LODGE ST FOTHAD'S, AUCHTERDERRAN, FIFE was raised by Brethren living and working in Cardenden and the surrounding area. Most of the founding members were Miners, employed by the Fife Coal Company in one or other of the three collieries in operation in the area at the time, The Josephine at Bowhill, the Minto at Brighills and the Lady Helen Colliery at Dundonald. the Lodge Charter was granted by The Grand Lodge of Scotland on 5th August 1909. The Lodge was given the number 1059 on the Roll of The Grand Lodge of Scotland, (a most appropriate coincidence , 1059 being the year Fothadh became the chief Bishop of St Andrews and in effect the Patron Saint of our Parish of Auchterderran) and was consecrated on 18th September 1909. The Lodge has operated from it's present premises in Orebank Road since December 1969 when the alterations and additions to the former Church building were completed and in September 2009  celebrated it's Centenary with a Re-dedication Ceremony and Dinner in the Bowhill Centre..

Lodge meetings are held on 1st & 3rd Tuesdays from September to April and Masonic Visitors are always welcome.

Details are advertised in the Dundee Courier and in local shops.

William Miller says

the Lodge continues from strength to strength but like all organisations would appreciate those members who for whatever reason have ceased to attend their Mother Lodge, to again join us, even once per month, to seek to retain the existence of a Masonic Lodge in the village.

Lodge St Fothad's has in the past provided much-needed financial support to many families in the village and would very much like to be able to provide such assistance in the future but this remains in the hands of the Members of the Lodge who for whatever reason have failed to attend and support the Lodge in this aim.

The Lodge can only provide to the community that which the members put in to the Lodge.  I appeal therefore to those Brethren who read this web entry to return to their Mother Lodge and join with the brethren in contributing to the worthiest of causes :

To alleviate the problems of our poor, distressed Brethren and enable them to face the world on an equal footing.

Thank you for considering this appeal  !
